I Ching Consultations
What is the I Ching?
The I Ching or “Book of Changes” is one the oldest compendiums of written Ancient Knowledge in existence today. The first symbolic version is attributed to Fu Hsi a prehistoric chieftain of perhaps 3000 B.C.E. The modern written translations of I Ching in use today are based on the version completed King Wen a feudal lord, in the last generation of the Shang Dynasty (1766-1121 B.C.E). There have been many additions and commentaries added to the core text over the years, but all are still based on King Wen’s expressions.

The profound wisdom contained within the I Ching has been utilized by philosophers, politicians, teachers, scientists, mystics, leaders and laymen throughout the centuries, as the fundamental principles for leading a natural wholesome Life.

How was the I Ching developed?
Before the advent of specific cultures and written knowledge ancient humankind lived simply in direct contact with Nature. Such intimate contact allowed them to harmonize with Nature, and in doing so these first humans discovered in Her a great provider and Teacher. Through careful observation and many lives experiences they found consistent patterns in the constant flux of Nature. By learning to live in accord with these patterns or “Laws of Nature”, the ancient humans found peace and the way to lead a balanced life.

The I Ching is the written representation of these Laws, based on system of changing lines and the variable combination of the lines into 64 unique hexagrams. Each of the hexagrams represents a particular manifestation of energy inherent in Nature. A significant discovery of the I Ching is that the Laws of Nature are also the Laws of Humanity and that each hexagram applies equally to the lives of humans. In essence, ultimately Nature and Humanity are One, and harmonizing each together is the blessing and root of Life. The I Ching was created as an instrument, guide, oracle, and teacher to realize this Harmony with everything (Tao).

What kinds of Questions can I ask the I Ching?
Anything you want. People often think they have to ask mystifying spiritual questions of profound import, which often are so abstract; they miss the original point of gaining more clarity in their lives. Practical questions about daily material existence generally are the best because this is space where most of us live the majority of our lives. How to correctly balance all the elements in our worldly sphere: relationships, finances, family, practice, sleep, sustenance, work, play, community, etc… As you gain rapport with the I Ching (yourself) questions about the deeper implications of your Life (Spirit) are encouraged.

Mountain

Fire

Image: Fire is at the foot of the Mountain. This is image of Light burning away the darkness, illuminating everything around the Mountain. In a social sense this represents opening up to share you resources, warmth, and being a safe place for others. Another meaning of Hexagram 22 is not getting lost in the superficial external “adornments” of human society; titles, status symbols, money, fame, gossip, etc… Rather to work on improving your own inner virtues (nature) and sharing this natural good nature with others.

Following this brief introduction is more general information and a technical explanation of the energies affecting the situation. Then we will create a dynamic multilayered analysis of your particular query. This is a truly fluid process; every consultation is unique and complete within itself.

Is the I Ching Fortune Telling?
No, although it has been used and still used in this fashion, divination is an incomplete practice. One of the primary principles of Taoism (where the I Ching originated) is to be Present in the Now. The current moment is the only time you have the power to be effective in you Life: the future and the past are just that. To place too much energy (attention) in the future will, weaken your power in the Present moment.

Here at MSH we prefer to use I Ching consultations to help empower you in the Present moment. To clear away the obstructions that are preventing your growth and continuing evolution.
